Rachel Anne Dolezal, formerly Rachel Moore, was born November 12, 1977 in Lincoln County, Montana. Her parents are Lawrence and Ruthanne Dolezal. She was married to Kevin Moore from 2000-2004. She has one son from their marriage, Franklin Moore, and claims her 21-year-old adopted brother, Izaiah, as another son. Her parents adopted Izaiah and 3 other black infants between 1993 and 1995.

Dolezal received her Bachelor’s from Belhaven. In 2002, she earned an MFA from Howard University. Her art often reflects the experience of African Americans, and has been featured in the United Nations Headquarters in New York. From 2005-2013, she was a part-time art instructor at Northern Idaho University. She was an adjunct professor of Africana Studies at Eastern Washington University from 2007-2015. From 2008-2010 she also served as the Education Director of the Human Rights Education Institute in Idaho. In May, 2014, she became Chairwoman for the Spokane, Washington, Police Oversight Committee. On her application, she claimed to be African American, Native American, and White. She was the Spokane Chapter President for the NAACP from 2014-2015 and has been a freelance journalist for social justice issues.
