2. Income & Salary
After recording songs with his cousin’s band 94 East, Prince began his solo career and released his first album, For You, in 1978. Following the release of next year’s self-titled platinum album, Prince continued to rise to commercial and critical acclaim. The 1984 album Purple Rain propelled Prince to his status as a pop culture icon: the album sold over 13 million units in the United States, with 1.5 million units sold in its debut week. The album was backed by a feature film of the same name, which grossed over $80 million at the box office and has gone on to become a cult classic. The 1990’s saw Prince struggling for creative and financial control against the Warner Bros. record label, resulting in his changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol, as well as releasing five full length albums in only two years to fulfill his contractual obligations. Prince dropped the symbol moniker in 2000, after his publishing contract expired. In the 21st Century, Prince still goes on tour, and has found new and innovative ways to release his music, including through downloads and newspaper bundled promotional CDs.
