Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born on December 1, 1949 in Rionegro village in Antiquia, Columbia. He was the third of seven children born. His father, Abel de Jesus, was a farmer and his mother, Hemilda Gaviria, was a school teacher. He was married to Maria Victoria Henao and became the father to Manuela and Juan Escobar. His life of crime began early, as he and his brother reportedly stole gravestones from the local cemetery, sandblasted the stones smooth and sold them to smugglers from Panama. After graduating high school, Escobar briefly attended the University of Antioquia. However, his criminal career continued with a series of scams that included selling contraband, phony lottery tickets and stealing vehicles. He aspired to become a millionaire by the age of 22.

2. Income & Salary

During the 70s, Escobar supported himself through theft and acquiring positions as bodyguards. Escobar orchestrated the kidnapping and ransom of a local Medellin executive that garnered him $100,000. He veered into the drug industry with the assistance of known smuggler and multi-millionaire Alvaro Prieto. Escobar, his brother Roberto and cohort Oscar Bernal Aguirre began purchasing coca paste from various South American countries. The paste was then refined, transported to the U.S. and sold to dealers. Escobar orchestrated the execution of Fabio Restrepo who headed the Medellin drug cartel. The budding drug lord seized control of the operation and began building his empire.

At his peak, Escobar was smuggling approximately 15 tons of cocaine into the U.S. daily. His wealth enabled him to employ a personal army, weaponry, a fleet of air, land and water-based vehicles. He owned hundreds of thousands of acres in property, which included an estate in the Florida Keys and eleven homes throughout Columbia. He became a hero to his village after financing the construction of schools, hospitals and recreation areas in addition to bringing electricity and other amenities to the impoverished location. At one time he was deemed the seventh wealthiest man in the world with an estimated net worth of $30 billion. His crime spree came to an abrupt end on December 2, 1993, when he was executed by Colombian law enforcement. Though much of his wealth was donated back to the community.
