He passed away suddenly on February 1, 2015 after slipping into a coma during a routine medical procedure. This death from a severe allergic reaction has left his fans in disbelief. Monty took the code from the popular games Halo and Metroid, and used the combat dynamics of Super Smash Bros. to choreograph an epic battle between Halo’s Master Chief and Metroid’s Samus Aran. This video racked up over 4 million views and landed Oum a job with midway games as a combat animator. From there, Oum landed a gig with the famous web miniseries ” Red vs. Blue”, a series with voice-overs and animation containing the Spartans of the Halo series. At the time of his death Oum had just experienced wide-spread success of his web series entitled RWBY.
