Kimberly Denise Jones (more commonly known by her stage name, Lil’ Kim), was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 11, 1974 to parents Linwood Jones and Ruby Jones (now known as Ruby Jones Mitchell). She was raised and grew up in Brooklyn. When her parents divorced when she was nine years old, Kim continued to live with her father. She attended Sarah J. Hale Vocational Academy and then transferred to Brooklyn College Academy. When she was a teenager, Linwood Jones kicked his daughter out of their home. She was forced to stay with friends and spend many nights out on the street. Kim had a passion for freestyle rapping and she was heavily influenced by female hip-hop artists MC Lyte and Lady of the Rage. Kim’s life changed drastically when she was heard freestyle rapping by hip-hop artist The Norotious B.I.G. He became a huge influence on her life both personally and professionally, especially when he obtained celebrity status with Bad Boy Records. The Notorious B.I.G. introduced a new hip-hop group called Junior M.A.F.I.A., which featured a 19 year old Lil’ Kim. In the next year, Kim started a solo career by offering her vocals on other artists albums. She eventually started creating her own albums.
