2. Income & Salary
J.K. Rowling is most famous for her Harry Potter series of children’s fantasy novels. The idea for the first book struck her in 1990 while the train she was riding from Manchester to London was delayed for several hours. She was a poor, single mother living in Edinburgh as she wrote the first novel, unemployed and subsisting off of welfare. Diagnosed with clinical depression, she nevertheless finished her manuscript in 1995. The first twelve publishing houses she submitted to rejected the work. Eventually, in 1996, publishing house Bloombury’s editor Barry Cunningham agreed to publish the book upon the recommendation of his eight-year-old daughter Alice Newton. She was given a å£1500 advance and told to find a day job. A year later, the Scottish Arts gave her a grant of å£8000 to continue writing. After a small initial print run, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the US) won several awards, including the British Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year. An auction for the US publishing rights netted $105,000 from Scholastic, Inc. The series went on to break sales records on both sides of the Atlantic. She has since written two adult-oriented books, “The Casual Vacancy” and “The Cuckoo’s Calling” (under the pseudonym ‘Robert Galbraith’).
