2. Income & Salary
It was in college at Boston University, where Sterns graduated with a degree in Communications in 1976, that Sterns got his start in radio. In 1981, he hosted the second highest rated morning radio show on WWDC in Washington, DC. Based on the success of that show, NBC offered him a five-year contract worth $1 million dollars in 1982, which he accepted. While he was subsequently fired by NBC for “conceptual differences” in 1985, the parting of ways did nothing to squelch his career. Sterns moved to New York’s WXRK where his show was quickly moved to mornings in 1986 and was picked up for national syndication that same year. A television version of The Howard Sterns Show ran for 69 episodes and later another late night television show titled The Howard Stern “Interview” had a successful run on E! Television. In 1993, he gained a $1 million advance from Simon & Shuster for a book titled Private Parts that was later turned into a movie that sold $41.2 million in movie tickets. In 1995 he made a $3 million with ReganBooks for his second book Miss America. Currently Sterns is working as a judge (replacing Piers Morgan in 2012) for the television show America’s Got Talent.
