Emeril John Lagasse was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on October 15, 1959. He has been married three times and has two children from his first marriage (Jessica and Jillian Lagasse) and two children from his current marraige to Alden Lovelace (Jude and John Peter Lagasse.) His culinary career began with a part-time job in a Portuguese bakery when he was in high school. He went on to enroll in a culinary arts program at a vocational technical school and from there transferred to Johnson & Wales University.

Emeril opened his first restaurant in Louisiana in 1990 and it immediately won a “Restaurant of the Year” award from Esquire magazine. He now has 14 restaurants across the United States. Lagasse has appeared on many cooking shows and has had several shows of his own. He also has a range of grocery products, cookware, and cookbooks branded in his name. In 2002 he established the Emeril Lagasse Foundation to provide grants, scholarships and mentoring to disadvantaged youths seeking to get their start in a culinary career. In 2008, Emeril sold the rights to all of his branded merchandise to the Martha Stewart Living company for $50 million.
