Commonly known as Drake, Aubrey Drake Graham was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His father was a professional drummer and a native of Tennessee while his mother is a Caucasian Jewish Canadian. At age five, Drake’s parents divorced, which led to him mainly residing with his mother in Toronto and visiting his father in Tennessee during summers. Drake and his mother resided in Toronto’s Forrest Hill neighborhood, where he attended Forrest Hill Elementary and later Forrest Hill Collegiate institute, where his acting career began.

In 2001, Graham landed a role on popular Canadian teen television show, Degrassi: the Next Generation. His role on the show continued until 2009, when the directors replaced the entire cast. In the meantime, Drake released his first mixtap, which was made available via his website and MySpace account. Drake continued to release music following the success of the first mixtape. In 2007, when the “Replacement Girl” video aired, Drake became the first unsigned Canadian to have a video aired on BET.
