Kate Gosselin was born Katie Irene Kreider to parents Charlene and Kenton Kreider on March 28, 1975 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She completed a diploma program at Reading Hospital and Medical Center, becoming a registered nurse and working as a labor and delivery nurse.

She married Jon Gosselin in 1999 and remained married to him for 10 years until their divorce in 2009. The two had twin daughters (Cara and Madelyn) in 2005 through fertility treatments, and later had sextuplets (Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah, and Joel) through the same method due to Kate unable to conceive due to polycystic ovary syndrome.
